Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $7,437.50 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

KPBS serves the greater San Diego community with informative, cultural, entertaining and educational television, radio, and web programming. KPBS TV/FM is the public television and radio station for San Diego. Licensed to San Diego State University, KPBS supports and furthers the university's educational and community service mission by informing, enlightening and empowering its audience. It does so not only by presenting national and locally produced programming of value to its San Diego audience, but also by producing programming about San Diego and its people for distribution nationwide.

The function of the Development Division at KPBS is to manage and increase all aspects of mid-level and major gifts, Campaign gifts, planned gifts, endowment gifts, and annual membership of the Producers Club to the Station. Additionally, the Development Division plays a key role in raising awareness of its programming and activities throughout the community.

Responsibilities
The Mid-Level Development Officer is responsible for managing a portfolio of current and prospective mid-level members (currently defined as $600-$5,000 in annual support), including discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. The goal of the Mid-Level Development Officer is to identify donor capacity, elevate engagement, and increase philanthropy from our membership pool. The Mid-Level Development Officer creates opportunities for donors and prospects to become more deeply engaged with KPBSs mission and learn about organizational programs and initiatives that align with their giving interests.

This position collaborates within the Development and Membership teams and with departments across the organization to increase philanthropy and create a pipeline of donors from Membership to Major Gifts.

Fundraising (80%)
  • Manages a tiered portfolio of 400-600 current and prospective mid-level members with planned touch points, prompt thanking and timely solicitations, with a premium placed on donor retention and increased giving.
  • Responsible for developing and achieving revenue goals associated with their portfolio, as well as forecasting portfolio revenue.
  • Manages relationships with prospective and current mid-level members using multiple channels, including phone, email, personal mail, Zoom and face-to-face meetings, when appropriate, while also engaging donors through consistent stewardship and active cultivation to increase member support, achieve revenue goals and enhance the member experience.
  • Determines which donors would benefit from more personalization and increased frequency of contact.
  • Ensures appropriate and consistent donor-centric communications in all materials, such as solicitation, acknowledgement, stewardship and customer service. Participate in writing, editing, image sourcing and content approval.


Administrative Functions (10%)
  • Working closely with the Major Gifts Director and Chief Development Officer, develop and implement analysis on financial trends, key performance indicators (KPIs) and testing successes; ensure data-driven decision making on current and future strategy, to continuously strengthen relationships and increase revenue.
  • Tracking donor touchpoints like notes from calls, member interactions and emails or new/updated information about members.
  • Learns about KPBS programs and projects and effectively communicates the work as well as KPBSs mission to donors.


Other Duties & Responsibilities as Assigned (10%)
  • Attends and assists with KPBS programs, cultivation and stewardship events as needed.
  • Collaborate within the Development and Membership teams, and across the organization with Audience Development, Marketing & Communications as well as other teams and individuals, to strengthen the organization and remove silos.
  • Monitor fundraising trends (especially public media giving trends) and attend webinars, educational sessions on fundraising, or conferences to identify effective new fundraising approaches and solutions


Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences and individuals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with donors, colleagues, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated skills in attention to detail, strong project management, one-to-one sales or solicitations
  • Knowledge of CRM systems and databases
  • Demonstrated knowledge of strong phone, writing, design and mail merge skills
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles, strategies, and best practices.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated success in planning for and completing projects on time, on budget and within scope.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.


Minimum Education
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Nonprofit Management, Communications, Business) or additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis


Minimum Experience
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience


Preferred Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of experience in non-profit fundraising, donor relations, or a related field.
  • Experience with membership programs, development and fundraising, creating communication strategies and implementing stewardship plans
  • Knowledge of moves management, major gifts programs, public media fundraising and event-planning
  • Proven track record of cultivating and stewarding relationships with mid-level and annual donors.
  • Proficiency in using donor management databases and fundraising software.
  • Experience in broadcasting or cultural arts organizations.
  • Passion for the mission and goals of KPBS.
