Job Description Summary
The Assistant Director of Communications and Outreach will provide proactive leadership in developing and implementing all communications and outreach strategies, policies, and practices across the Department of Genetics and the Autism Spectrum Program of Excellence. Reporting to the Penn Genetics Chief of Staff and the Director of ASPE, the Assistant Director will have the exciting opportunity to lead, promote, and steward the Department's and ASPE's mission, teaching, research, and outreach/engagement through a variety of media, publications, and specific public relations strategies.

Job Responsibilities

Develop and execute a communication strategy employing traditional and new media to meet identified communications objectives. Direct the implementation of a communications plan designed to deepen awareness and understanding of the research and other work produced by the Department's and Center's faculty, students, research centers, and working groups. Work closely with key internal and external stakeholders committed to supporting your efforts to achieve the identified goals.

Design, develop, write, and/or publish various internal and external publications. This includes creating publicly facing content (e.g., digital online presence including social media, website, newsletters), press releases, promotional publications, infographics, videos, PowerPoint presentations, flyers, weekly/monthly announcements, publications that support Department events, donor progress reports, and special projects that appeal to community audiences, media outlets, funders, and other relevant audiences.

Oversee and direct various communications, marketing, and branding initiatives, strategies, and campaigns. This includes managing the Department's and Center's website, optimizing the use of social media, and other innovative marketing tools. Assess data analytics and overall performance, adjust content plans with trends as needed, and track website metrics/traffic.

Organizes significant community outreach and support initiatives and liaises with autism support-related organizations, media outlets, and various partners. Spearheads multi-media human recruitment for the genetic study of autism (ASPE) through print and digital targeted advertisements and manages submissions in research study pools. Develops innovative marketing and recruitment campaigns, driving visibility and enhancing stakeholder engagement through targeted and compelling narratives.

Perform proactive media outreach to arrange interviews, publish articles, etc. Develop relationships with international, national, regional, and local news media.

Assists in organizing conferences, symposiums, visiting Faculty seminars, community events, and recruitment events. Manage and coordinate meetings and meeting materials - internally and externally and Assist the Chair of Genetics with additional special projects/programs as they arise.

Prepare and manage internal (e.g., email listservs and Box folders) program-related communications and documents, as well as maintain essential program records.

Perform other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and 5 to 7 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience are required. Master's degree preferred.
Experience or familiarity with faculty needs and concerns.
One to two years of experience in creating and managing website content. Interest in developing web pages.
Prior use of WordPress is preferred.
Interest or experience in higher education

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
