Medical Insurance Specialist (UICOMP-Medical Billing) Medical Insurance Specialist (UICOMP-Medical Billing) Hiring Department: Medical Billing Location: Peoria, IL USA Requisition ID: 1024065 Posting Close Date: 9/24/24 This position is located on the Peoria campus 170 miles southwest of Chicago. (On-Site Work - Not Remote). The University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria (UICOMP) educates 265 medical students and more than 300 physician residents and fellows annually. Additionally, it provides clinical care to more than 31,000 patients annually and conducts basic science, clinical and outcomes research. UICOMP is a regional campus of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, a part of the University of Illinois Chicago and University of Illinois System. The College of Medicine Peoria is home to the Cancer Research Center, Center for Wellbeing, and is a collaborator in Jump Simulation. Learn more about UICOMP at http://peoria.medicine.uic.edu. Description: The primary purpose of this position is to independently process all self-pay accounts as they move through the revenue cycle. Takes the necessary action utilizing the Epic work queues to track the status of unpaid and delinquent balances and contacts the patient/guarantor by phone or letter; review such websites as OSF, Carle Health, Medicaid or other pertinent websites in order to obtain new or additional reimbursement sources. Submits new coverage to the third party payer and follows up if the balance remains unpaid. Facilitates the transfer of unpaid self-pay balances to the collection agency. This position functions under the general supervision of the Director of Fiscal Affairs. Identifies self-pay accounts with large balances via Epic work queues; researches various websites such as OSF, Carle Health, Medicaid, etc. to determine if insurance coverage is available to assist in the collection of charges. When coverage exists, documents files and adjusts bills to charge to that insurance. If no coverage exists, contacts the patient/guarantor directly to determine if third party coverage is available. Discusses available payment arrangements with uninsured patients. Answers a variety of billing questions from the clinics and Medical Billing peers to promote consistency. Fields incoming patient calls, addresses patient/guarantor questions, processes credit card payments, and sets up short-term (90 day) payment plans. Works Patient Estimates work queues to provide service estimates to self-pay patients. Prepares collection account reports. Corresponds with collection agency on a weekly basis to transfer past due account balances with no response to letters. Interfaces with collection agency regarding settlements, balance due, payment plans, etc. Transmits bi-weekly patient statements via Epic. Interprets and questions Epic rules and makes suggestions for modifications. Promotes consistency, completeness and accuracy. Participates in staff meetings, special projects and may participate in the training of new staff. Performs other duties as assigned. Performs duties consistent with the lower-level of series.
