Assistant Director, Health Professions Advisor - The Career Center

The Career Center, a unit within Student Affairs, exists to empower career choice and action by coaching and supporting Illinois students, while connecting them to opportunities, as they make career decisions and learn lifelong career management skills.  The Assistant Director - Health Professions Advisor must be passionate about interacting with students, thrive in a team environment, and be committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  Occasional evening and weekend work is required.

Job Summary

Multi-faceted role that coaches students one-on-one and in groups with a particular focus on health professions advising; coordinates career development programs and workshops; and fosters relationships with key campus partners and/or external stakeholders. Supervises paraprofessional student staff who deliver peer-to-peer services, workshops, and programs. Part of a collaborative and innovative team committed to career development and success of all Illinois students.

Duties & Responsibilities

Direct Service to Students  (50%)
• Advise and coach pre-health students as they explore, prepare for, and apply to health professions/programs, such as medical/dental/pharmacy school, which includes personal statements, application reviews, and interview assistance.
• Develop and deliver student facing workshops and programs, with primary focus on pre-health.
• Coach students one-on-one and in groups regarding career exploration and planning, employment/internship search, and graduate school preparation and application.
• Provide content for and maintain learning management system.

Outreach and Engagement with Key Stakeholders  (25%)
• Coordinate events and strategic partnerships with admission reps and health related community agencies.
• Collaborate with campus partners to deliver services and programs for pre-health students.
• Develop, maintain, and actively cultivate relationships with campus partners and other stakeholders who contribute to career development services and programs.
• Oversee the planning and execution of?events, such as the Graduate and Professional School Fair, open houses, orientation programs, or other similar activities, with a focus on pre-health students and engagement with admissions representatives.
• Deploy outreach strategies to engage historically excluded and marginalized students.
• Contribute to development and implementation of collaborative pre-health initiatives in partnership with the broader career services or advising community at Illinois.

Supervision, Administrative and Management  (25%)
• Recruit, hire, train, and supervise paraprofessional student staff who deliver peer-to-peer services, workshops, and programs.
• Assess, analyze, and report on engagement and impact of services and programs and facilitate continuous improvement.
• Contribute to the design, creation, and maintenance of print and online resources.
• Create and deliver presentations for a variety of audiences, including parents, campus partners and external colleagues about The Career Center.
• Serve on The Career Center, Student Affairs and/or campus committees, task forces, work groups, and advisory committees.
• Participate in professional development activities and associations, as well as participate in continual training to stay up to date on trends in health professions admissions.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. Expected start date is as soon as possible after close of the search. Salary range is $59,000-$62,000. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
