Description: This is a trainee classification for employees attending basic law enforcement training (BLET). Employee progress to the Police Officer classification upon successful completion of BLET and attainment of law enforcement officer certification from the North Carolina Training & Standards Division. Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, municipal governments, or with private enterprise. This program utilizes State-commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include, but are not limited to, criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic and alcoholic beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody, and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics and community relations. Students must successfully complete and pass all units of study which include the certification examinations mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission to receive a certificate. Primary Function of Organizational Unit: The primary mission of Police and Public Safety is to provide a safe and secure environment supporting the University's pursuit of research and academic excellence. Our highly dedicated law enforcement professionals continually strive to reduce crime, accidents and loss of property through investigative processes and effective community partnerships. Requirements: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency. All students entering the Basic Law Enforcement Training program must meet the special requirements as indicated by the N.C. Criminal Justice Standards and the N.C. Sheriff's Standards Divisions of the N.C. Department of Justice. Students may not be convicted of any felony or serious misdemeanor offenses as defined by the Commission. They cannot be convicted of any offense of moral turpitude. Examples of moral turpitude are, but not limited to: rape, any sexual offense, indecent liberties, use, sale, or manufacture of controlled substances, or any offense which addresses public morality. To be employed in this field, it is necessary to be a U.S. citizen.
