Position Details:

Summary of Duties:

Manage lab operations for the WSU Entomology Tree Fruit Entomology and IPM Program, based in Wenatchee. The lab manager will work closely with faculty, students, and hourly workers to ensure smooth operations and experimental success. The lab manager will assist and/or lead in data collection, sample processing, data management, and space use. The incumbent will also assist in inventory control, purchasing supplies and equipment, shipment and receiving of materials/samples, and oversight of scheduling and assigning tasks to hourly workers in the Tree Fruit Entomology and IPM lab. The successful candidate will be organized, have knowledge and experience maintaining rigor in scientific experimental protocol, and communicate clearly and effectively to support a high-quality research program. They will provide training and guidance for graduate and undergrads working on various projects that involve the use of equipment and materials in the Tree Fruit Entomology and IPM lab.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research Support | 50%

Work with program faculty to coordinate ongoing research projects
Work with program faculty, students, and staff to understand experimental design needs
Develop and update research SOPs
Write and edit research methods, protocols, and maintaining in centralized location
Assist with data collection, sample processing, and data entry
Schedule and overseeing regular data management activities to improve scientific transparency and best data management practices
Work closely with faculty, students, and staff to determine insect colony needs
Assist with field collection preparation
Assist in quality control of data management
Coordination with other staff to support program needs

Administrative | 35%

Assist with shipping, receiving, and storage of samples
Manage safety equipment inventories
Maintain safety training and equipment SOPs
Manage and purchasing lab supplies and equipment
Manage vehicle maintenance schedules
Assist with travel scheduling and coordination for students and other program members
Schedule and overseeing regular lab cleaning activities
Maintain orderly work spaces in program research buildings
Stay on top of best practices for data collection and data management through professional development training

Supervisory and Training | 10%

Supervising hourly workers in data collection, sample processing, and data entry
Training new students and workers in data collection techniques

Other Duties | 5%

Other duties and projects as assigned

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate related scientific discipline and four (4) years of progressively responsible professional experience which has included at least two (2) years of supervisory experience.
Thorough understanding of the scientific method, and experience writing and following scientific procedures and protocols.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to effectively interact with people in a positive manner.
Experience in data analysis, statistics, and reporting results in formats suitable for scientific publication.
Ability to conduct field and laboratory experiments on insects, including, but not limited to codling moths, X-disease vectors and natural enemies of tree fruit pests.
Expertise in pests and diseases, and ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Must have, or be able to obtain by the time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.
Computer skills required, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel), internet searching, email communications, and Zoom virtual meetings.

Preferred Qualifications:

Six (6) additional years of experience in related field preferred.
Experience overseeing research throughout all stages, from experimental design through to publication of findings.
Evidence of co-authored peer-reviewed articles, scientific reports, and scientific communication.
Experience managing a research laboratory.
Pesticide applicator's license.

Monthly Salary:

$5,139.79 - $7,872.23 | Zone 2, Grade 6

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
