Lecturer or Assistant Professor of Mathematics

Position Summary:

We seek energetic and enthusiastic individuals who love teaching and share our dedication to excellence in undergraduate education. The successful applicant will join a close-knit program and school that offers bachelor’s degrees across a broad spectrum of disciplines in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, including computer science. Responsibilities include teaching mathematics courses across the curriculum, working with other faculty to continually maintain and update courses, advising students, and engaging with the broader university. Faculty teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. Although we are primarily an institution focused on teaching excellence, faculty are also expected to remain connected to their academic field through scholarly or creative work (for a tenure-track position) or professional development (for a non-tenure-track position) and contribute in the area of service.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with diverse faculty, staff, and students within the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and across campus. Candidates should demonstrate that they possess (1) a commitment to student-centered instruction, (2) a plan for maintaining currency in their field of expertise, and (3) a commitment to furthering the university’s mission of Inclusive Excellence.

Start Date: The position is available to start January 13, 2025.

Mission of the Department

The School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) prepares students to be scholars and professionals in their discipline by fostering scientific inquiry and critical thinking that promotes lifelong learning and problem-solving skills.

Minimum Qualifications

• A Ph.D. in mathematics, mathematics education, or a closely related field is required for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) position. A Masters in mathematics, mathematics education, or a closely related field is required for a Lecturer (non-tenure-track) position.
• A strong focus on undergraduate teaching and student-centered learning
• Demonstrated knowledge of, sensitivity to, and ability to work effectively with, the educational needs of individuals and groups with a diverse range of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and abilities
• Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity of student populations similar to those of Adams State University, including students with different abilities (e.g. physical and or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded, inclusive practices within the classroom
• Ability to treat others with respect, civility, and courtesy and to work honestly, effectively, and collegially with employees, students, and the community.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with historically under-served and/or underrepresented populations, and first-generation college students.
• Ability or experience in the recruitment and/or retention of underrepresented students, including students of color.
• Commitment to professional development, scholarship, and service to the university and community.
• Demonstrated self-awareness of one's own cultural beliefs, perspectives, and privileges as a part of one's orientation towards teaching.
• Demonstrated decision-making that is informed by research, data, and theory and that leverages students' unique cultures, experiences, and background as strengths.
• Experience teaching using a variety of delivery methods at the undergraduate level.
• Experience with and commitment to supplemental instruction and/or co-requisite instruction.

Salary and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $50,590 - $53,760 commensurate with experience and education. The salary range reflects a minimum for an entry level Lecturer or Assistant professor position to a maximum for an experienced Lecturer or Assistant Professor position.
