Department HB & PB Coding ServicesJob Summary
The Coder IV is a key member of the Coding Team and has shared accountability for the success of the department. The Coder IV reviews medical record documentation to abstract and assign diagnoses, procedures, and modifiers for statistical classification and reimbursement purposes. This includes, but is not limited to, various coding assignments under the direction of Coding Management. Provides feedback regarding documentation and coding issues. Utilizes software applications and coding references, including electronic, to perform coding related tasks. The Coder IV maintains an understanding of and ensures compliance with, all applicable Official Coding Guidelines. This position advanced experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.FacilityThe Level IV inpatient coder's primary task is to code inpatient accounts. Proficiency in ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding and PCS, including DRG coding required. Experience with writing physician queries required.ProfessionalThe Level IV coder's primary task is coding complex inpatient, observation, surgical and procedural based areas. Proficiency in ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding and CPT procedure coding required.
Essential Functions:
- Meets or exceeds the minimum coding productivity standard for the type or coding performed. Submits a fully completed and accurate production log weekly in a timely manner. Meets or exceed the minimum coding accuracy rate of 95%. Meets or exceeds the minimum timeliness standard. (85%)
- Participates in coder and provider education including documentation improvement efforts for providers. Interacts with provider, nursing staff and departments as assigned. Assist in the training and quality assurance of all coding levels. Completes any required coding training or other assigned coding instruction. Participates in departmental coding and educational meetings and roundtables. Maintains current coding credential. (10%)
- Follows all departmental and DHHA procedures. Follows directions given by coding Management. Manages resources in a conservative, responsible and cost-effective manner. Ensures confidentiality of patient information by creating and maintaining a secure and trusting environment by not sharing information learned on the job, except when necessary in the performance of the job responsibilities. Works as a member of a coding team for the successful benefit of the department and DHHA. Strives for strong unit cohesion by working well with other members of the team and performing tasks in a manner that maintains the unit cohesion. (5%)
Education:
- Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Required
Work Experience:
- Five years medical coding with multi-specialty experience or specialty certification Required and
- Two years? experience in an academic setting Required and
- Proficiency in all major specialties Required and
- Strong procedural coding Required and
- Experience reviewing DRG assignment required Required
Licenses:
- CCS-Certified Coding Specialist - AAPC - American Academy of Procedural Coders Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Applies advanced knowledge of coding and compliance with a working knowledge of hospital based, teaching physician guidelines.
- Knowledge of encoder and data abstraction software.
- Strong knowledge of billing and reimbursement.
- Possess good oral and written communication skills.
- Possess strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
- Able to think critically.
- Must be capable of reading and interpreting coding guidelines and making subsequent coding decisions.
- Knowledgeable in researching coding related topics and issues.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to give professional presentations.
- Ability to handle a fast paced environment and be a positive role model.
- Must pass a coding proficiency pre-hire test with 85% accuracy or higher.
- Good computer keyboarding skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Epic experience helpful.
- Encoder experience helpful.
