Job Description and DutiesCandidates in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount. This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by providing administrative, planning, training and technical support for the CDPH Infectious Diseases Laboratory Division (IDLD) in the Center for Laboratory Sciences. Under general direction of the Chief of the High Risk Pathogens Section (HRPS), the Research Scientist II plans, organizes, coordinates and administers scientific training, outreach and emergency preparedness actvities related to Select Agents and other high-risk or emerging pathogens, as part of the state Laboratory Response Network for Biological Threats (LRN-B) Advanced Reference Laboratory. The Research Scientist II (RS II) serves as the primary liason to public health professional staff from other state, local, or federal agencies as well as laboratory stakeholders (including clinical and local public health laboratories). The RS II provides technical support for development and performance of highly complex microbiological laboratory methods, techniques, and procedures for Tier 1 Select Agents. The RS II is responsible for updating and monitoring IDLD Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) grant deliverables and providing written and verbal reports to stakeholders and partners. This position will serve as a scientific advisor and consultant and may serve as an Alternate Responsible Official (ARO) for Tier 1 Select Agents.
