Description About the Department The Undergraduate Communications Design (UGComD) department seeks a new faculty member in ILLUSTRATION. The department offers a BFA in Communications Design with a concentration in either Graphic Design or Illustration (the cohorts typically run about 50/50). UGComD is one of the largest departments at Pratt and includes over 80 full-time and part-time faculty and around 500-600 majors. It is a lively community of accomplished and collaborative artists and designers who have thriving professional practice and/or research agendas. The student body is approximately 33% international and 67% domestic and reflects a diverse racial and ethnographic mix. Position Summary The Undergraduate Communications Design department in the School of Design at Pratt Institute invites applications for a full time tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor/Associate Professor rank to begin Fall 2025. The ideal candidate is an inventive, experimental, tech-forward thinker and maker who values both the fundamentals of visual communication (illustration-forward) while also expanding the discipline to be more inclusive and community-minded. Once hired, the candidate will be expected to teach required integrated courses in the curriculum (studios and seminars) that include both graphic design and illustration students, as well as illustration-specific courses. They are expected to have the mindset of an academic leader-to develop/reshape the existing curricula to adapt to changing needs in industry and society. The ideal candidate should be an active practitioner whose work integrates digital media and tools (i.e. Adobe Suite, Procreate, Blender, AfterEffects, motion, creative coding, etc.) as well as having knowledge and experience with cutting edge technologies (i.e. VR applications, Generative Ai, etc). We are looking for a colleague who will actively contribute to the warm, collaborative nature of our department and who will participate in the creation of a vibrant and inclusive culture for our students. As a tenure-track hire, beyond teaching duties, candidates should demonstrably contribute to community and departmental leadership by being an advocate, mentor, and advisor to our students, participate in faculty governance at the department, college and campus-wide levels, as well as maintaining a robust professional practice and/or research agenda.
