DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The University of California's Executive Communications and Engagement team is part of the Communications Department and provides speechwriting and strategic engagement support to the UC president. The team produces speaking and briefing materials for public events and meetings; writes public letters, articles, and op-eds; manages the president's social media presence; and provides the president with in-person advance and staffing support as needed. The team works closely with communications colleagues (including Strategic and Critical Communications, External Engagement, Creative Services, and Internal Communications) as well as government relations and other UC departments to articulate and advance UC messaging priorities through presidential remarks and events. POSITION SUMMARY Reporting to the Director of Executive Communications & Engagement ('Director'), the Associate Director of Executive Communications and Engagement ('Associate Director') will assist in leading a team responsible for crafting public engagement strategies that advance and support the goals and initiatives of the University of California and of the UC president. The Associate Director is responsible for researching and writing a variety of speeches and other communications, planning and executing high-profile public events, and managing a high volume of fast-moving deadlines, working closely with the Director, the UC president, and other UC leaders and stakeholders. This position functions with a high degree of autonomy and requires sharp political acumen, keen organizational skills, demonstrated ability to manage and meet multiple deadlines, expert writing and editing skills, and an in-depth understanding of the audience and communication strategies that will best serve the president of the university and the institution as a whole. SPECIAL CONDITIONS The person hired will be required to reside within California and report to work on-site at UC's Office of the President (UCOP) located in Oakland, CA on a regular basis. Current policy requires that a new employee work on-site at least two days a week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays ('anchor days'). SALARY AND BENEFITS Job Title Written Communications Manager 1 Job Code 000419 Salary Grade Grade 25 Payscale: $140,000 - $160,000 The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
