Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring a Water Jet Machinist. Under general supervision, the machinist will provide technical support in water jet machining, perform routine and specialized assignments using water jet and support equipment, and apply intermediate-level knowledge to operate a 5-axis water jet machine and software to produce basic and complex shapes. The role may include rotating assignments to provide basic machining support for specific projects or programs. What You Will Do: - Apply expertise in 5-axis water jet theory and practice to efficiently complete assignments.
- Design and fabricate work-piece fixtures for unique or production water jet cut parts from various materials under general supervision.
- Advise technicians, designers, engineers, and scientists on manufacturability with water jet capabilities.
- Operate material handling equipment, including overhead cranes and forklifts, to move large materials or parts.
- Use manufacturer-provided software to produce parts from prints, CAD files, sketches, or verbal instructions.
- Utilize computers with lab-supported CAD/CAM software applications to:
- Access, manipulate, and construct electronic drawings and models, including dxf files.
- Apply efficient tool/cutter paths, waterjet sequences, and feed rates to geometry.
- Generate, edit, and transfer machine tool controller-specific part program instructions.
- Decode blueprints, sketches, parts lists, and assembly diagrams.
- Understand and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing standards, including:
- Compare Datum Reference Frames to Datum Features for correct decoding.
- Understand symbols and terminology for part feature form, orientation, size, and location.
- Comply with Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) rules and regulations (LBL Pub-3000 and related documents).
