Job Description Summary
The Application Developer Senior will be responsible for developing innovative real-time neurophysiological and neurobehavioral experiment control and acquisition software. The ideal candidate will collaborate with a team developing cutting-edge experimental paradigms, integrating hardware and software components to push the boundaries of neuroscience research. This team member will focus on front end software development and back end cloud-based infrastructure management for platforms to support the modeling, collaboration, and analysis of research, preclinical and clinical neuroscientific data by engineers, scientists, clinicians and collaborators in the Department of Neurosurgery. The team member will lead mobile app development to support research objectives. Additionally, the Application Developer will be responsible for developing and leading technical design documents, implementation of services, and test-suites for the developed resources. This position will work closely with other members of the team within Penn Neurosurgery at The University of Pennsylvania, and with external collaborators through joint projects.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

Develop, optimize, and maintain software for experimental control and data analysis using C++, Python, and Hadoop.
Work with real-time systems to ensure efficient data acquisition, processing, and storage. -
Collaborate on the development of novel stimulus and behavioral paradigms for large-scale experiments.
Build and maintain multi-modal experimental setups integrating hardware (e.g., high-precision sensors, cameras, electrophysiological head-stages) and software (e.g., LabVIEW, OpenEphys).
Provide IT support, including managing Linux systems, file storage, and web services.
Implement state-of-the-art data management solutions for large-scale experiments.
Troubleshoot hardware and software integration issues for neurophysiological experiments.
Train students and staff on the use of custom-built software and experimental setups.
Lead workshops and individual training sessions to enhance technical skills in programming and data management.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Position is contingent upon continued grant funding.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience (required), Master's or PhD (preferred) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
2-3 years of practical experience in real-time system development, including experimental neurophysiology or neurobehavioral paradigms.
Expertise in programming languages including C++, Python, and Hadoop.
Experience with signal processing, data acquisition, and hardware-software integration.
Familiarity with LabVIEW, OpenEphys, Kilosort, or similar neuroscience tools.
Experience with Linux, Windows, Mac OS operating systems
Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Ability to communicate effectively with team members

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency with Linux systems, MySQL databases, and cloud storage solutions.
Experience with high-throughput data management and experimental hardware (e.g., high-precision sensors, eye/face/body cameras).
Background in real-time data processing for large-scale experiments.
Experience in Neuroscience, Neurology, Neuroengineering or related field
Experience with graph databases, Python and Rust
Experience with SQL and databases
Experience with AWS infrastructure, and Terraform

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
