Assistant Division Chief | STAFF SERVICES MANAGER III

The posted position is in the Division of Radiation Safety and Environmental Management (DRSEM). DRSEM protects and improves the health of all California residents through its environmental programs that are implemented by its two branches: the Radiologic Health Branch and the Environmental Management Branch. Through these two branches, DRSEM administers multiple environmental programs that include radiation safety, medical waste management, bio-toxin monitoring, Department of Defense radiation contaminated site cleanup, indoor radon detection, and nuclear emergency response and inspection, monitoring and surveillance services, scientific and regulatory analysis, and regulatory activities to protect and improve the environmental health of Californians. The Assistant Division Chief (ADC) will provide policy oversight and input into the planning, organization, management, and direction of the statewide radiologic health and environmental health within the Division of Radiation Safety and Environmental Management. The ADC acts as an extension of the Division Chief and provides professional management expertise and general administrative leadership to protect the public and workers from unnecessary exposure to radiation, the safe use of radioactive materials and X-ray producing machines, environmental health management in the areas of medical waste, bio-toxin, nuclear emergency response, radon detection, and military installation radiation contamination remediation. This position will assist the Division Chief in directing policy development and implementation for the Radiologic Health Branch and the Environmental Management Branch. The ADC addresses highly visible sensitive public health issues pertaining to the many various scientific programs within the Division. The incumbent will provide management and guidance to management level staff in the two branches as well as the administration of the Division. The incumbent must also interface effectively with all levels of management at the Federal, State, and local agencies and with the regulated public. The successful candidate will possess strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills to engage and motivate staff. The incumbent will also represent California Department of Public Health at task forces, committees, and conferences and meetings with various governmental and constituent organizations related to environmental health issues.
