Posted Job Title Research Specialist A (Department of Neuroscience) Job Profile Title Research Specialist A Job Description Summary We seek a highly motivated research technician in the laboratory of Dr. Sandra Maday in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. We study how neurons and astrocytes eliminate cellular trash through a process of self-digestion called autophagy. Autophagy is a key neuroprotective pathway to maintain cellular homeostasis in the face of aging, and is altered in the context of many neurodegenerative diseases. We combine advanced techniques in quantitative cell biology, live-cell imaging, and biochemistry to investigate autophagy in primary neurons and astrocytes, and in models of neurodegenerative disease. The primary functions of this position are to (1) drive a research project (collect, analyze, and interpret data, and present data at group meetings) concerning the molecular mechanisms of autophagy in neurons and astrocytes, (2) act as lab manager to coordinate and support the basic needs of the research group (includes ordering and receiving lab supplies, maintaining lab equipment, and preparing solutions and DNA constructs) and (3) manage the mouse colony. Experience with molecular biology and mouse handling is preferred but not required. Job Description Perform lab management duties including ordering/receiving lab supplies and maintenance of lab equipment; manage a mouse colony of approximately 50 cages: includes breeding, genotyping (including ear clipping), and setting up timed pregnancies; drive a research project concerning the molecular mechanisms of neuronal autophagy: collect, analyze, and interpret data, and present data at group meetings; prepare solutions; DNA construct experiments: design and clone, verify construct in cells, troubleshoot results. Qualifications Bachelor's Degree with 0-1 year of related experience in research and clinical study methodologies or equivalent combination of education and experience required. This position is contingent upon funding.
