General Description of Position: | The Assistant Director will directly administer and manage the university challenge course, the climbing wall facility in the Rec Complex, and the Outdoor Rental program. This person will assist in the administration of all programs conducted by the department including budgeting, personnel, facilities management, formulation and administration of rules and policies, long range planning, and evaluation. This person will be held accountable for the continued growth and improvement of all programs including the development and implementing of risk management policies and procedures. This person will provide a collaborative, team-oriented approach to the overall management process of Recreational Services. The development and continued improvement of customer service practices and staff training will be a standard expectation for this person. This person will have no outside duties or jobs that directly interfere with these responsibilities. This position will report to the Associate Director. |

Job Description: | CHALLENGE COURSE and CLIMBING WALL Personnel: - This person will hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate all student employees in the operations, education and risk management procedures of the challenge course and climbing wall.
Finances: - This person will oversee, advise, and assist in budget preparations, fund controls, equipment purchases and adherence to university policy.
Program Management: - This person will establish and maintain the fee schedules for the use of the challenge course and special uses of the climbing wall. Will maintain records with regards to the purchasing and inventory of equipment, participation numbers, risk management procedures, payroll information, and year-end reviews. Will develop a maintenance schedule for all challenge course elements, climbing wall structures and equipment to ensure proper operation and adherence to established material use policies. Will purchase new and replacement equipment as necessary. Will complete and maintain an updated inventory record including date of purchase, cost, vendor, location, amounts, repair, maintenance, etc. Will promote the challenge course and climbing wall through regular publications, web site information, university activities, and other appropriate means in cooperation with department’s marketing staff. Will develop and maintain relationships with clients. Will manage a master schedule of program events and schedule groups accordingly. Will design and assist staff in the design of custom challenge course and climbing wall programs, route setting etc. in consideration of unique requests, group size or demographics. Conduct routine facility and equipment inspections to ensure safety and program risk management in accordance with national standards and best practices and departmental guidelines.
Education: - This person will provide education and certification to all student facilitators in both areas. Will provide continuing education in management of challenge courses and climbing walls. Will maintain a working relationship with vendors for scheduling training of staff and inspections of the course and the wall.
OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT RENTAL Personnel: - Hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate all student employees.
- Train employees in the processes of using Fusion, PC Charge, and appropriate financial documentation as it applies to the rental of equipment, late fees, and equipment replacement.
Program Management - Establish and maintain the fee schedules for all equipment rental.
- Maintain records with regards to the purchasing and inventory of equipment, participation numbers, risk management information, payroll information, and year-end reviews.
- Maintain a maintenance schedule for all rental equipment to ensure proper operation. Will assist in the purchase of new and replacement equipment as necessary.
- Complete and maintain an updated inventory record including date of purchase, cost, vendor, location, amounts, repair, maintenance, etc.
- Promote the program, its activities, and the equipment availability through regular publications, group rentals, university activities, and other appropriate means.
Leadership - Develop and execute strategic plans and vision for Outdoor Recreation program.
- Produce reports and statistical compilations of program activities.
- Manage operating budget of Outdoor Recreation program.
Student Development - Assist in the development and management of the department wide student employee leadership and development program, which includes the student NIRSA club, Rec Ambassadors, departmental internships, and special events to enable and further the professional experiences of our student staff.

ADDITIONAL: Will assist in the development of staff training including the instruction of CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens training. Will serve the University and Department via committees including Recreational Services Council, and other committees as needed. Will serve the department as a member of the Recreational Services Student Development and Leadership Team All position responsibilities will include some evening and weekend supervision. Will perform other duties as assigned by the Director. |
