POSITION SUMMARY: To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Service and Stewardship by assisting pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. Pharmacy technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist.
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Quality/No Harm: - Fills physician orders, medication carts, or stock requisitions accurately.
- Prepares intravenous admixtures or other sterile products accurately.
- Replenishes medications in Pyxis units.
- Delivers medication and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas per established delivery.
- Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date.
- Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas.
- Attends pharmacy staff meetings and reads pertinent email communication.
- Participates in orientation, education, and training programs. Reviews literature and other materials as assigned.
- Completes all competence/skills assessment requirements.
- Maintains patient and department/hospital confidentiality.
- Maintains Technician Registration.
- Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.
- Generates reports, pick lists, and labels as required.
- Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately. Files documentation in appropriate locations.
- Collects data, conducts quality monitors, and completes documentation as assigned.
- Maintains bar-code database; packages bar code medications.
- Completes patient Medication Reconciliations accurately and efficiently.
Stewardship: - Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately.
- Ensures supplies and pharmacy stock are used appropriately to limit waste.
- Identify opportunities to reduce waste and provide cost savings.
Customer Experience: - Picks up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery rounds.
- Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.
- Generates labels as required.
- Answers the telephone, identifying self and department. Directs calls to appropriate personnel.
- Answers requests at the window and makes stat deliveries to patient care areas when requested.
- Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.
- Demonstrates good oral and written communication.
- Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well organized. Keeps pharmacy equipment clean.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Maintains patient and Department/Hospital confidentiality.
