Transfusion Medicine Pathologist

HNL Lab Medicine is seeking a full-time Transfusion Medicine Specialist with fellowship training and board certification/eligibility in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine (BB/TM).  Applicants must have an MD or DO degree, strong knowledge and skill set in all aspects of transfusion medicine including immunohematology, consultative hemotherapy, apheresis/exchange, hematopoietic progenitor cell and mononuclear cell collection and processing, cellular therapy, coagulation, and regulatory compliance.  HNL Lab Medicine provides supervision of blood banks/transfusion services and cellular apheresis services, including to provide collection for hematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation and lymphocytes for CAR T-cell manufacturing, for patients treated within the Lehigh Valley Health Network, now proudly a part of Jefferson Health.  The successful candidate will join two experienced Transfusion Medicine physicians and share responsibilities including on call.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Shared oversight and support of a network of blood banks that provide services, compatibility testing and dispense >32,000 blood components for transfusion at our affiliated LVHN hospitals with a combined capacity of >2,000 beds, Level 1-4 Trauma Centers, busy Cancer Centers, and Ambulatory Surgery Centers. 

• Participation in internal and external quality assurance, performance improvement activities, and patient blood management
• Provision of clinical consultation to clinicians and laboratory clients on matters relating to test results and their interpretation concerning specific patient conditions and to guide hemotherapy, as applicable
• Working with laboratory leadership to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and accrediting agencies for blood bank and transfusion services
• Interaction with accrediting and governmental agencies to ensure continued regulatory compliance
• Interpretation of transfusion reactions
• Management of withdrawals, recalls and lookbacks
• Leadership, development, consultation, donor evaluation and participation in the apheresis/therapeutic exchange service, mononuclear cell collection and cellular therapy program
• Oversight of policies and procedures for the Cellular Therapy Program
• Blood Bank Medical Director and General Laboratory CLIA Director responsibilities as assigned
• Shared on call responsibilities
• Educational responsibilities include participation in the education of rotating medical students, hematology/oncology fellows and blood bank trainees.
