The Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior (DPHB) is dedicated to excellence in clinical care, education, innovation, research, scholarship, & community partnerships. The Chair will serve as the chief academic officer of the DPHB & will be primarily responsible for developing & implementing an academic plan of research, faculty development, diversity, & education that will enhance an internationally renowned department. The academic plan will include a program for the growth of both departmental & interdisciplinary research. The Chair, at Brown & all of its affiliates, has a role working with local leadership at all of the affiliates to develop strategy & assist in the oversight & facilitate the success of the academic & clinical programs at each of these affiliates. The Chair will develop & execute, along with the Dean, a strategic plan to lead a robust growth of innovative research programs designed to enhance basic science, translational, clinical & outcomes research. They will work to fully develop key institutional partnerships & strategic relationships & define & acutely pursue interdisciplinary clinical & research goals. The Chair will strive to strengthen the Department's academic mission & clinical excellence with recruitment, retention, development & support of outstanding faculty (psychiatrists & psychologists) & staff to enhance the Department's national reputation: building diversity & inclusion among faculty, staff, & trainees. The Chair is the educational leader of the department & will support an excellent teaching environment for the students, residents, fellows, post-doctoral fellows, & psychology interns & provide appropriate exposure to scholarly activity. The Chair will also ensure successful ACGME accreditation for the residencies & accreditation for the psychology program. By fostering an excellent educationally stimulating environment with balanced service & education, the Chair will help recruit high-caliber residents & fellows. Responsibilities As Chair of an academic department in the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University: - Plan, organize & implement the educational & research activities of the DPHB at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
- In alignment with Division policies & procedures, serve as the chief fiscal officer & manager of the department, responsible for developing & adhering to approved budget as well all other financial & management practices set by either the division or university.
- Understand the overall financial condition of the University, the Division of Biology & Medicine, & hospital & health system partners & be willing & able to effectively interpret & communicate to the members of the department as well as to make appropriate adjustments as circumstances require.
- Recruit & retain a distinguished group of faculty with expertise in psychiatry & promote inter-organizational & inter-hospital collaboration to achieve a critical mass of Psychiatry & Human Behavior, full-time faculty.
- Oversee the direction of undergraduate medical education, along with the two Residency & five Fellowship Programs sponsored by the DPHB & ensure compliance with the standards of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, the appropriate specialty boards, & accreditation agencies, including LCME. Oversee the directors of these programs at the hospitals. Maintain the reputation of these training programs with expertise in clinical acumen, compassion & patient-centered care.
- Organize & oversee research programs in Psychiatry & Human Behavior & in the sciences related to Psychiatry. Foster faculty participation in other scholarly activities, including engagement with professional societies, publications, advocacy work, & other innovative contributions.
- Responsible for maintaining the quality of the faculty & for supporting their professional development. Supervises procedures for recruiting, interviewing, & appointing new faculty members & for the department?s adherence to the principles & purposes of diversity & inclusion.
- Have & elucidate an academic vision that helps define the department's strategic academic goals & is responsible for conveying & explaining these goals to the faculty.
- Work effectively & pro-actively with all stakeholders, including the Dean's Office, to articulate the vision & to ensure that the vision & strategy appropriately align/comport with the strategic & financial priorities of the University & of the Division of Biology & Medicine as established by the Dean, as well as the hospitals.
- Effectively formulate, define, & prioritize the academic, recruitment, equipment & space needs of the Department in support of the vision & strategy. These formulations need to be accurate, realistic, timely & appropriately prioritized to assure optimal allocation of scarce resources.
- Be an effective & objective broker of potential conflicts.
- Liaise between the administration & the faculty.
- Oversee promotions & assess faculty performance while ensuring that individual & overall departmental faculty performance meet appropriate University, departmental, & division- established performance standards & metrics. Review & process through the University & schedule senior appointments & promotions for review by the Committee on Medical Faculty Appointments (CMFA). Based on this annual evaluation, organize recruitment of needed faculty & establish benchmarks for growth & sustainability.
- Ensure that university, division, hospital, & funding agency policies & procedures are understood & adhered to by those responsible for financial transactions & operational decision-making & that the department operates within the constraints of externally & internally funded budgets.
- Optimize the efficient & effective operation of the department by making wise & efficient utilization of hospital, University, Division, & Department resources, including financial, human, & space resources. Align with all applicable policies.
- Advocate for the department while simultaneously working for the larger good of the Division of Biology & Medicine, Brown University, & the health systems. In this capacity, the Chair is expected to convey departmental issues to the Dean?s office and/or hospital leadership while simultaneously offering the faculty a clear understanding of decisions, policies & priorities.
- Provide mentorship to the faculty, residents, fellows, & students at each of the affiliated hospitals & at Brown. Actively participate in scholarly endeavors that enhance the body or knowledge in psychiatry & serve as a role model for other faculty in the Department.
- Actively participate in the teaching programs of the department at all levels & provide academic & career-related counseling to students, residents, fellows, & faculty.
- As directed by health system leadership, prepare & or present a report to system leadership, which may include Boards of Directors of Bradley, Butler & Rhode Island/Miriam Hospitals, & the Academic Affiliation Council of the VAPHCS on the current state of academic affairs within the DPHB & the anticipated needs & direction of the Department over the coming year.
- Serve as a role model for the Department by demonstrating institutional citizenship through participation in governance & in committee activities of the department, the Medical School, the affiliated hospitals, the University, & the profession at large.
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of Medicine & Biological Sciences.
