Music Specialist

Want to teach music in an elementary school? Meridian School is looking for a music teacher to begin mid-August, 2025. We are looking for candidates who love teaching and are gifted at building a culture of joyful music with elementary school children and the school community. Ideal candidates possess a background in elementary education, previous experience working with diverse learners, a commitment to fostering a sense of belonging for all students, and a minimum of three years of experience as a teacher. This is a .8 FTE position. We are a school PreK-5 of 185 students within the Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement a developmentally appropriate music curriculum for students PreK to 5th grade that includes singing, movement, instruments, and listening 
• Create a warm and welcoming learning environment that sparks curiosity and joy in performing arts
• Produce, rehearse, and lead grade-level choral and music performances throughout the school year
• Serve on the Friday Morning Meeting (FMM) Committee to help prepare and execute weekly community gatherings that include weekly sings
• Provide instruction on various instruments, such as the ukulele, recorder, Orff instruments, and percussion
• Utilize a culturally responsive teaching approach to support all learners
• Actively create and maintain a well-managed, positive classroom environment that supports student engagement and motivation
• Actively participate in faculty work aligned with the strategic plan
• Have a commitment to ongoing cultural competence professional development, and the motivation to put these skills into practice
• Understand and support the school’s mission through professional conduct and actions which demonstrate the core values and philosophy of the school
• Bring an open mind and an eagerness to learn
• Attend community meetings, weekly staff meetings, and in-service days
• Write student evaluations according to the school year calendar and as assigned by the Assistant Head of School
• Support our “open door” policy with parents, colleagues, and students
• Participate in Curriculum Night, Grandparents and Special Friends Day, Open House, and other stewardship opportunities 
• Openly communicates with families in formal and informal ways
• Support duty and teacher planning coverage as needed, including, but not limited to, morning meetings, lunch, recess, and dismissal
• Establish and cultivate community relations by maintaining open dialogue with all the School’s constituencies
• Actively participate in the full life of the school
• Is familiar with and complies with all policies and regulations as put forth in the school’s documents
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, faculty, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities
• Perform other duties as assigned
