CUNY Kingsborough Community College
Lecturer - English/ESL (Revised 4/9/25) FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT The English Department at Kingsborough Community College, of the City University of New York, a vibrant educational and scholarly community, seeks a full-time specialist in TESOL/Linguistics at the Lecturer rank. Founded in 1963 as part of the City University of New York (CUNY), Kingsborough Community College remains firmly committed to its mission of providing both liberal arts and career education, promoting student learning and development, and strengthening and serving its diverse community. Kingsborough serves a degree-seeking population of approximately 8,500 students and consistently ranks among the leading community colleges in the country by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. It has also earned national recognition for its creative and effective use of learning communities, for the large number of degrees it confers, for the high percentage of graduates who continue their studies, and for the innovative programs that draw thousands of non-traditional students to its campus every year. Located on the beach in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, Kingsborough offers a spacious, tree-filled campus-rare in the CUNY system. Candidates will teach ESL (including co-requisite courses), integrated reading-writing courses in the first-year composition sequence (including co-requisite courses), and other electives, as needed. Evidence of ongoing scholarly interests and activity in applied linguistics/TESOL is required, as well as an ability to work collaboratively with others in a large, active department. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to engage in committee and department assignments, which might include administrative, supervisory, and other functions. The successful candidate will join a warm, collegial English department that teaches ESL, composition, literature, creative writing, and professional writing courses. The department is home to Kingsborough's A.A. concentration in literary studies and creative writing. Lecturer positions carry a 24-hour course load per academic year, which can be divided across 3 terms: fall, winter, and spring, with the bulk of teaching falling in the traditional fall and spring terms. Lecturers in the CUNY system are eligible for tenure equivalent-certificate of continuous employment- after 6 years, which confers a level of stability and commitment often lacking in other systems. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. QUALIFICATIONS A Master's degree in applied linguistics/TESOL/rhetoric and composition, or a closely related field is required. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, to participate in current scholarship or to demonstrate scholarly achievement, and to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
