OUS Summer Institute - Academic Mentor
Colgate University
Accountabilities: The Academic Mentor (AM) will work closely with the Academic Director and Co-Director regarding all aspects of the summer program. Broadly, the Academic Mentor will be there as an academic resource to the incoming cohort of students, helping them to hone their critical faculties and facilitate scholarly habits of mind. This will include, among other responsibilities, continuing to cultivate students' analytic and creative writing skills; planning workshops that allow students to understand the philosophical foundations of the liberal arts; introduce students to the larger Hamilton community/area; and offer study sessions throughout the summer. In addition, the Academic Mentor will live in the dormitory with the students and oversee the undergraduate Summer Institute Community Facilitators (CFs). This group of current Colgate undergraduate students will also live in the dorm and the AM will coordinate all working hours and programming put on by the CFs within the living/learning environment. In addition, the CFs will be working on their own research projects over the summer that the AM will help oversee and coordinate. The AM will receive direct mentorship and training from the Co-Directors of the program in the week leading up to the beginning of the SI. Dates of employment are July 7 – August 15.
