Precourt Institute for EnergyAs part of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the Precourt Institute for Energy concentrates the talents of the University on energy research and education, from basic science and technology to policy and business. We disseminate research results and help the University develop energy-literate leaders as part of its educational mission. We work across campus in all seven of Stanford's schools. We also convene and build collaborations globally with industry, other research institutions, government, and civic organizations in pursuit of sustainable, affordable, secure energy for all people. Job Description The Precourt Institute has a multifaceted structure that serves as an umbrella organization to our many independent and diverse units. Reporting to the chief of staff, the finance associate director will be responsible for the financial management and research administration of the institute and its many cross-campus university initiatives (Bits & Watts Initiative, StorageX Initiative, Hydrogen Initiative, Natural Gas Initiative, Sustainable Finance Initiative), cross-cutting research programs (New Zero Energy Alliance, Strategic Energy Alliance, Technology Transfer for Defense, Energy Equity and Just Transitions, Precourt Pioneering Projects, Stanford Energy Research Consortium, the Stanford Energy Postdoctoral Fellowship), a new center for Sustainable Transportation, and five growing education programs (Energy Executive Education, Explore Energy, Understand Energy, Hacking for Defense, and Climate Energy Ventures). We are also currently exploring new initiatives and an alumni energy engagement program, with other new programs in the works. A new focus is to establish a team of academic staff researchers to develop a systems analysis approach to support and serve faculty in their research pursuits connecting research to real-world solutions and providing grant proposal writers to secure DOE and DOD government funding. This team will serve Precourt's one of three primary pillars (research, analysis, education). An outcome will be to secure large government research grants, which will require additional research administration staff to support post award activities. The primary responsibility for the finance director will be to manage the day-to-day financial operations and activities for the institute, develop intricate models to evaluate our diverse financial goals and strategies for our varied many programs and initiatives that function independently within the Precourt umbrella; contribute to critical evaluation of existing financial structures and processes to identify needs for new systems or financial models; administering our internal controls across our institute's copious units; collaborate with leadership to understand operational requirements and develop streamlined processes for practical reporting, budget planning, forecasting and scenario evaluation; provide financial guidance, training, and mentoring to direct reports and to our team of program managers. Additionally, the finance director will supervise a team and perform the typical financial operations to manage the annual budget cycle and financial processes, provide comprehensive reports, identify and resolve complex analytical issues, conduct forecast and what-if scenarios, implement processes to improve efficiencies and internal controls, identify and develop solutions to improve workflow effectiveness and best practices for productivity standards, and manage compliance with university policies and procedures. This position will be tasked with having a significant role in performing ad hoc analysis and developing reports to support Precourt's leadership and is expected to be a key contributor for the financial management of the Institute.

Additionally, strong relationship management is expected as the finance director may represent the institute in financial functions with external units such as the Doerr School of Sustainability Finance Team, Office of Research Administration, Office of Development Donor Relations, Dean of Research, Finance Management Service, and other schools as required.

The expected pay range for this position is $147,542 to $165,694 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
