Summary

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Certified Nurse Anesthetist (CNA) provides a full range of services emphasizing quality - timeliness - and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission. The CNA practices to the full extent of their education - training - and certification.

Duties

• The CNA is a licensed independent practitioner with advanced education and national certification who provides responsible and accountable evidence-based care for a population of patients
• The scope of practice includes direct patient care - administration - educational - and research activities
• Duties include but are not limited to: Develop and implement a comprehensive anesthesia plan of care for patients requiring local - regional - general - and monitored anesthesia both inside and outside the operation room suite
• Assure the delivery of anesthetic care - including preoperative consultation - procedures - daily preoperative clinic - perioperative care - and sedation throughout the Medical Center is of the highest quality to promote patient safety and satisfaction
• Conduct emergent code/floor intubations - member of the medical emergency response team
• Resource for staff education
• Willing to be an active clinical preceptor and adjunct clinical faculty for Health Professional Trainees rotating through the Anesthesiology Section and Medical Center
• Establish and promote an atmosphere of unity through collaborative practice and effective communication between all staff disciplines within the Medical Center
• Facilitates and assists multiple services and departments throughout the facility to improve outcomes and efficiencies
• Develop and implement through program planning - the philosophy - objectives - policies - and standards that are essential to the delivery of high-quality anesthesia care
• Practices in collaboration with other health care professionals in a collegial relationship to achieve common goals for care - safety - and welfare of patients
• Provide anesthetic services within four general categories to include pre-anesthesia preparation and evaluation - anesthesia induction - maintenance - and emergence - post anesthesia care - and peri-anesthetic and clinical support functions outside the operating room (OR) suite
• Compliant with relevant requirements for continuing education - competence in advanced life support - and listing pertinent education - training - or expertise in specialty areas
