Senior Administrative Law Judge

A Day in the Life:

• Presides over and independently manages complex utility litigation with assigned Commissioners, assuring procedural matters are timely and adequately addressed and sufficient evidence is presented, while maintaining the integrity of the process.      
• Works cooperatively with Commissioners and staff on assigned cases by reviewing all case filings, proactively engaging in team discussions on issues, and providing timely and appropriately researched legal advice.
• Drafts Docket Entries,\ and Orders in assigned cases that clearly articulate the Commission’s decisions, comply with applicable legal requirements, and provide sufficient evidentiary basis and rationale to allow for judicial review. 
• Attends seminars and conferences to maintain current knowledge of utility regulation, judicial writing, and related fields.
• Proactively shares experiences and facilitates discussion of new issues with fellow ALJs to ensure consistency within the Division and offers suggestions for improving Commission processes and procedures. 
• Assists the Chief ALJ by assisting in the training/supervising of new ALJs and paralegals, accepting responsibilities outside of case-related duties, and covering for the Chief ALJ when needed. 

What You'll Need for Success:

• Possess a Doctor of Jurisprudence and be a member of the Indiana State Bar in good standing.
• Experience in utility operations and administrative law is preferred.
• Extensive knowledge of, and demonstrated ability to apply, all applicable legal requirements, including the Indiana Rules of Evidence, Trial Rules, and the Commission’s procedural rules.
• Extensive knowledge of utility principles and theories as established by the Commission, Appellate and Supreme Court decisions, and other state and federal agencies. 
• A demonstrated and comprehensive understanding of Indiana utility regulatory procedures and practices.
• A basic knowledge of finance and accounting theories, economics, and engineering principles.
