Associate Director, Harvard Impact Labs
Harvard University Kennedy School
Job Summary Harvard Impact Labs (HIL) is a new University-wide pilot initiative to support Harvard faculty in developing solutions to pressing social problems in collaboration with government, nonprofits, and the private sector. Impact Labs are collaborations between scholars and practitioners to design, test, and scale solutions with the goal of solving a significant social problem in the U.S. or in other countries. Like other academic research centers, they produce cutting-edge research published in top journals, but their ultimate goal is to have an impact at scale that improves people?s lives. Each lab focuses on a specific societal challenge, such as local economic development, affordable housing, educational achievement, high-quality healthcare, or public safety. HIL provides the institutional backbone for individual impact labs at Harvard to be successful ? training for faculty, an intellectual community of scholars working in similar ways, and administrative and financial support. Initial components of the initiative include: an annual Impact Lab Development Fellowship for a cohort of 8-10 faculty members to help them develop and prepare to launch an impact lab, a competitive grant process to award Impact Lab Start-Up Funding to enable faculty to start or expand impact labs, and Public Service Leave support to enable faculty to take leaves to work in government or at nonprofits. HIL is led by Executive Director Pauline Abernathy and four faculty co-directors: Danielle Allen, James Kim, Jeffrey Liebman, and Amanda Pallais. It has a distinguished Faculty Advisory Board of scholars from across the University, and its staff are based at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS). Working closely with the Executive Director, the Associate Director will oversee planning, operations, and communications for HIL, including building and managing efficient systems for awarding funding, and overseeing HIL?s website, communications, and social media strategies to effectively engage key audiences and communicate progress, impact, and insights.
