Production Designer

Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is seeking a talented, focused and energized Production Designer to join our Marketing and Communications team. This team articulates, stewards and promotes RISD's brand to create connections with the institution by discovering and sharing stories about the RISD community; developing, managing and consulting on all visual and verbal expressions of the institution; and providing direction and support to campus communicators. The team is composed of Creative, Digital Experience and Public Relations.

The Production Designer will support the creation and refinement of various branded materials across digital and print platforms while maintaining a consistent identity and quality standards for the school. Reporting to the Associate Design Director, the Production Design works closely with the Assistant Brand Director and Creative Producer, receiving overall art direction, final approval of designs, and creative guidance. They will be an active contributor to various stakeholders in Marketing & Communications, including Public Relations and Digital Experience needs. Collaborate across multiple projects with varying institutional needs and with a variety of stakeholders.

Essential Functions:

Graphic Design, Production Design, and Pre-Press including the following:

Presentations and Slide Decks

• Design and typeset institutional presentations for various audiences (prospective students, current students, external stakeholders)

• Maintain content across multiple presentation platforms (Google Slides, PowerPoint, Adobe Express, Keynote, Figma)

• Ensure brand consistency across all RISD presentation materials

• Design and create new presentation assets based on campus needs

• Curate, source and select images that best represent slide content

• Create graphs, charts, and information graphics following RISD brand style guidelines

• Support visual data presentation for reports, presentations, and digital platforms

Social Media and Digital Content

• Refine typography, photography, and image resolution for RISD's institutional social media accounts including @risd1877

• Produce digital assets for advertising campaigns across various aspect ratios

• Create new templates based on the identity for social media use across campus

• Support documentation for finished projects like books and posters (documenting final work)

Email, Web and Digital Communications

• Build department lockups and email templates for campus communicators

• Create and maintain social media templates in Figma and Adobe Express

• Create, edit and maintain emails in Google, Mailchimp and other email clients

• Developing and deploying branded visual graphics to support www.risd.edu landing pages

Print Design

• Design and produce print mailers for RISD (including postcards, posters, certificates, acceptance folders)

• Maintain annually updated content using established templates for print design

• Prepare files for print production

• Review and approve proofs in collaboration with project lead and lead writer/copy editor

• Approve jobs on press for print and maintain a professional and collegial relationship with our print partners

• Prepare pre-press files to handoff to vendors, ensuring color, materiality, and typography is consistent with RISD brand guidelines.

Campus Signage and Environmental Graphics

• Create branded banners, external signage and interior signage consistent with existing RISD wayfinding systems

• Update templates and customize content for various campus locations

• Package designs for production and stakeholder review

• Promotional Items and Swag

• Design promotional items (pens, tote bags, stickers)

• Research and recommend vendors across price points and locations considering our guidelines for sustainability and supporting local production

Additional Functions:

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience Requires:

• Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design or related field

• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Adobe Express)

• Proficiency in Figma, PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides, and Slack

• Strong typography skills

• Laser-like attention to detail

• Ability to work within established brand guidelines while maintaining creativity

• Remaining elastic when faced with shifting priorities or project evolution

• Essential writing, editing and proofing skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in production design, preferably in higher education or arts institutions

• Understanding of print production processes

• Animation and motion graphics skills

• Experience working with social media content creation

• Proficiency in (an)other language(s) in addition to English
