Job description: A Laboratory Manager position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Liam Chen in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Minnesota. The Chen laboratory focuses on clinical and research interests on defining cellular pathways underlying neurodegenerative disorders.
Responsibilities 70%: Design, perform, and analyze experiments ⢠Develop a new therapeutic strategy, i.e., enforced repression of cryptic exons to prevent neurodegeneration in a well-developed animal model ⢠Identify cryptic exons incorporated in purified neurons and astrocytes that have lost nuclear function of TDP-43 from postmortem ALS/FTD brain and spinal cord ⢠Conduct genetic and drug screening the chronic traumatic encephalopathy model to identify genetic and chemical modifiers to prevent the neuronal loss ⢠Analyze experimental data to test hypothesis and interpret the results. Prepare and interpret results for publication and presentations. ⢠Interpret complex data and advise PIs and others within work unit, department, and outside investigators.
20%: General Lab Management, Maintenance, and Inventory Management ⢠Maintain laboratory records, inventories, and logbooks ⢠Provide and enforce standard operating procedures - ensure samples are received and stored properly, ensure all waste is removed according to regulations, ensure compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures ⢠Manage the financial and budgetary aspects of the laboratory and research projects ⢠Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment ⢠Serves as an expert resources to other lab members, technicians, and support personnel ⢠Responsible for lab supply ordering, and lab organization and cleaning
10% Administration ⢠Review literature searches on relevant topics to the laboratory and present on topics related to the laboratory ⢠Correspond with PIs and other outside laboratories, corresponding and meeting with other University laboratory personnel on joint projects, corresponding with accountants and other university resources regarding projects and personnel ⢠Assist with drafting contract/grant proposals including researching methods, literature searches, fixing formatting issues, compiling multiple people's input into one draft, drafting budgets, obtaining appropriate quotes, finalizing details, sending materials, and corresponding with accountants, SPA, and other entities involved in grant submission |
