Assistant Dean of Students

Job Description:

1. Serve as the primary mental health case manager for Ohio University's CARE team caseload working with students who are experiencing difficulty and/or barriers that may include, but are not limited to: physical and/or psychological health/wellness, academic performance, food/financial/housing insecurities, as well as interpersonal relationships.
2. Manage the Office of the Dean of Students' role in the medical withdrawal, return from medical withdrawal, and tuition appeals process.
3. Participate in the overall activities and mission of the Office of the Dean of Students including:
   1. Serving as a member of the Office of the Dean of Students on-call rotation and providing appropriate, coordinated response to personal and campus emergencies (including student deaths and missing students), and response and presence to campus demonstrations and protests.
   2. Manage the Office's compliance responsibilities (official notices for students, voter registration/election information, liaison with local election board, federally required Constitution Day programming, etc.
   3. Maintain consistent presence in the office for counsel/ advising/ problem solving with students, faculty, staff, and parents/families who call or drop in.
   4. Serving on University's Assistant Deans Council representing the Office of the Dean of Students and communicating key updates the team.

4. Specialized knowledge of behavioral intervention and threat assessment, case management, and student development. Knowledge of campus and community resources, general mental health and trauma-informed knowledge and crisis intervention skills. Ability to handle confidential information in a sensitive, compliant, and appropriate manner; using sound judgement in responding to crisis situations.
5. Specialized knowledge of behavioral intervention, threat assessment, and case management. Working with students experiencing a mental health crisis requires sensitivity and respect, knowledge of mental health diagnoses, as well as community and campus resources.
6. Collaboration is critical in this position – both internal and external to the university. Crisis response involves collaboration with the Athens Police Department, Athens Fire Department, Ohio University Police Department, campus and community mental health agencies, Office of Civil Rights Compliance. Collaboration with faculty and academic colleges is an important part of the crisis response of the office. Working with students experiencing a mental health crisis requires sensitivity and respect.
7. Effective decision making is a critical function of the position and often involves issues related to response of suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, threat assessment, mental health crisis and general behavioral intervention. In addition, the decision making is most often reactive versus proactive and requires prompt and thoughtful response.
8. On occasion, out-of-office work is necessary to attend to crisis related incidents (off-campus student housing for tragedy response, travel for funeral, and response to hospital as necessary.
9. The Assistant Dean provides support and response to students who display suicidal ideation or attempt suicide, which as case manager often means phone calls and follow-up to faculty, staff, other students, and sometimes parents. As a liaison to others in this process, the assistant dean manages sensitive and confidential information. This position requires a significant amount of judgement and discretion.
10. This is an in-person position located on the Athens campus. Must be able to respond to campus within ~30 minutes when serving on-call. While clinical licensure is not required for this position, those with educational backgrounds in mental health professions are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's Degree in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, CSP, HE, or Counseling preferred
• 3 Years of Related Experience

• This is an in-person position located on the Athens campus. Must be able to respond to campus within ~30 minutes when serving on-call. While clinical licensure is not required for this position, those with educational backgrounds in mental health professions are encouraged to apply.
