NURSING SUPERVISOR (D. Dan and Betty Kahn Pavilion: Level 9 - Surgical, Vascular, Telemetry Unit)

The D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is a 12-story hospital that will house 264 private rooms capable of converting to intensive care; a state-of-the-art neurosciences center; and high-level, specialty care services for cardiovascular and thoracic patients, along with advanced imaging. The 690,000-square-foot hospital which also features 20 surgical and three interventional radiology suites is being constructed adjacent to the Frankel Cardiovascular Center, with plans for bridge and tunnel connections to existing inpatient care facilities. The anticipated opening of the new D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is fall 2025.

The nursing supervisor will provide professional nursing leadership and administrative direction for nursing practice within the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion, Level 9, General Care, Surgical, Vascular, Telemetry Unit. Participate as an active member of the leadership team focusing on daily staffing, scheduling as well as operational needs.  Additionally, the nursing supervisor will play an active role in recruitment efforts, hiring, continuous quality improvement, safety, customer service, education, and research. To participate as a member of the leadership team to provide and continually improve health care services and to support the mission and goals of the health system. To ensure the quality of nursing services provided to patients. The ideal candidate will be firm yet personable, a strong leader, with the ability to set high standards and hold people accountable for meeting unit performance and patient care standards. They will have process an improvement background and demonstrated ability as a change agent. Prior experience in nursing leadership is preferred.

Pavilion 9 is a 48-bed general care, telemetry, surgical and vascular unit with all private rooms.  The unit  promotes a family-centered approach, providing education and resources to patients.  Nursing care includes patients requiring general care, telemetry, surgical care, titratable drips, arterial lines, and cardiac monitoring.

Personnel Management

• Select, hire, and plan for staffing, consistent with service needs and budget.
• Schedule and assign clinical staff, arrange coverage as needed.
• Supervise, mentor, counsel and evaluate staff as part of a continuous development program within the Professional Framework.
• Support staff education, cross training, and proficiency development.
• Develop and foster teamwork and building trusting relationships. 
• Facilitate open channels of communication with the ACNO, directors, managers, peers, staff, and physicians.
• Counsel and discipline staff to enable achievement of the unit and institutional objectives, particularly as related to high quality patient care.

Clinical Practice

• Facilitate and support a nursing practice environment in which empowerment, responsibility, autonomy, accountability, collaboration, and peer review are exercised.
• Plan, coordinate, and evaluate quality assurance activities.
• Participate in the development of patient care models and systems.
• Serve as a role model to other departmental staff in the provision of direct patient care.
• Participate in multidisciplinary and unit problem-solving regarding patient care.
• Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.

Clinical Operations

• Coordinate unit operations including instrument processing, equipment evaluation, specialty implants, and specific surgeon requests.
• Plan and monitor expenditures from payroll and commodity budgets.
• Coordinate and control vendor site access and activity.
• Participate in the development and implementation of unit goals and objectives.
• Manages, directly and in collaboration with others, staffing, scheduling, and benchmarking, work redesign and cost management strategies in the planning and management of clinical operations.
• Interprets and implements university and health system policies and procedures.
• Assists in the planning and implementation of new or expanded services and programs.
• Represents nursing and or clinical department/unit on assigned committees.

Quality Assurance and Research

• Assists in the development of strategies to improve care management within the area or unit.
• Participates in and supports the involvement of nursing staff in unit quality improvement activities.
• Provides leadership to staff in understanding and applying quality improvement principles and adoption of evidence-based changes in practice into daily work. Promotes the integration of research findings into clinical practice.
• Supports research activities on the unit, as indicated.

Professional Development Education

• Facilitate collective activity in professional organizations.
• Develops self professionally through continuing education, professional reading, participation in professional organizations and networking. Evaluates own performance periodically with the CND/ACNO.

Required Qualifications:

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.

Required Educational Requirements:
Applicant must meet one of the following:
* Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR
* Associates degree or Diploma in Nursing and a Master's degree in Nursing.

• Minimum five (5) years RN experience.
• Minimum two (2) years of recent (within the last 5 years) RN experience in general care, telemetry, surgical, or vascular nursing.
• Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nurse leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). The nursing leadership certification must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC.), for the list visit here .
• Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability, including charge nurse, team leader or other management experience.

• Masters of Science in Nursing 
• Advanced computer skills desired, including proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and educational research systems. 
• Demonstrated experience in direct workflow with peers. 
• Supervisory/management experience with responsibilities for staff development 
• Expertise in cardiovascular nursing, or surgical nursing.
• Experience with new program development.
• Excellent customer service, communication, team building, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work with multiple disciplines.
