![]() Locksmith (On-site) Hiring Range The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is Step 1: $44.87hr. About the Job To perform skilled Locksmith journeyman level work and be responsible for installation, modification, testing and preventative maintenance of the lock and access systems and equipment associated UC Merced campus and off site locations, including the campus card reader systems. This position will need to be able to drive to offsite locations as needed, drive to get parts, for emergency repairs, drive to trainings as needed. Low voltage knowledge is required for this position, including ability to install conduit, wire, make connections and terminate communication wiring. This will at times require work in confined spaces. All work needs to be completed to code and UC Merced standards. Working closely with the Skilled Trades Supervisor, the Locksmith will be responsible for maintaining the inventory of the low voltage tools and parts required to fulfill job duties in the Auxiliary Lock and Access department. The majority include, but are not limited to, electrified hardware for keyless access. Additional devices include Duress alarms, glass breaks, door locks and exit devices. Knowledge of circuitry, and how various security parameters are established and achieved is required. This position will work closely with the Skilled Trades Supervisor, as well as Project Managers and Building Managers, to provide detailed advice, assisting on the placement of card readers and security devices on building modifications and new construction. Assist supervisor on writing and reviewing specifications and drawings. Monitor the project build; assist on direction to make the project successful. The Locksmith will also need to possess computer skills associated with the access and alarm management software. Requires the ability to read and interpret trades schematics and drawings, ability to prepare estimates, plan and manage own projects within allotted budgets. Current knowledge of Building Codes associated with this trade. Incumbent must possess excellent customer service skills. This class must take the necessary safety precautions when working to follow department guidelines, equipment service and operation manuals, and code regulations. Maintain absolute integrity. Work is performed sometimes in emergency repair situations. This class must take the necessary safety precautions when working around machines, equipment, and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Judgment is required in troubleshooting and in determining methods of repair. This class is expected to resolve problems occurring in daily assignments and discuss unusual problems with the supervisor. This position will be required to work a non-standard work schedule with the ability to work variable and irregular hours and shifts, weekends and holidays, and participate in an on-call program. This class is an journeyman level position. The Locksmith class involves full responsibility for the performance of the more advanced Lock and Access tasks. Incumbents in this class perform work independently with considerable latitude for determining work methods used and are subject to periodic spot checks. This class may assist other mechanics in diagnosing and repairing Lock and Access equipment with complex, unusual and/or very difficult problems; assist other skilled trade workers in maintenance and repair of buildings and campus facilities; cross train the mechanical and low voltage locksmiths and perform related work as required.
