Started in August 1991 and located at Cornell University since 2001, arXiv.org is an open access research sharing platform for scholarly articles. The e-print repository has transformed the scholarly communication and knowledge dissemination of multiple fields of physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering, systems science, and economics. arXiv is a global resource, with 70% of institutional use coming from countries other than the USA. arXiv resides in Cornell Tech with staff and faculty collaborations spanning both Ithaca and New York City campuses.

Today, arXiv.org is in the midst of rapid technological and organizational change to ensure its longevity in and support of the scientific community. We are in the midst of a multi-year project, arXiv Cloud Edition (or arXiv CE), through which we are migrating all aspects of the arXiv system to the cloud and modernizing our code base. The goals of arXiv-CE are to improve stability and capacity, ease expansion into new subject categories, allow easier integration with other services, and otherwise prepare arXiv to be able to support the future needs of the communities we serve.

Position Summary

arXiv is seeking a highly experienced and results oriented Engineering Director to provide expert guidance and hands-on leadership. This high-impact role requires a balance of proven leadership and mentorship ability, technical expertise, and strategic organizational design capabilities. arXiv is in the midst of a critical period of change, building processes and developing a resilient, future-looking engineering team, all while working to complete a major technology migration.

This is a temporary, full-time, benefits-eligible position for up to a 1-year term. The incumbent may later be considered for a regular role. There is flexibility for a hybrid remote schedule with primary work location at the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City, or fully remote within the United States. However, the role involves managing a team operating primarily in the Eastern Time (ET) zone, requiring significant working hours to overlap with EST business hours. Flexible work schedules are subject to change.

Starting salary range: $178,000-$200,000

Essential Functions Include:

Organizational Structure and Staff Development [40%]

• Structural Transformation: Transition the arXiv technical team to a project team structure, with multiple leads managing collaborative projects. Establish pathways for professional growth and recognition. Develop decision-making processes that scale. Build the moat that will protect development priorities.
• Team Development: Serve as the high-level people manager for a distributed team of 15, including software engineers, project managers, and UX professionals, with responsibility for managing other managers. Provide targeted career coaching. Promote development of leadership and management skills, as well as continuous technical skill development.
• Culture & Collaboration: Foster collaboration and build knowledge sharing processes to support and sustain arXiv's growth. We are transitioning from a culture of independent work within a small team, to one that emphasizes collaboration and coordination to achieve complex goals.
• Performance & Alignment: Set clear expectations. Align teammate talents with technical needs and personal development goals. Optimize project efficiency and personal engagement. Meet with individuals to discuss performance and provide continuous feedback. Take pride, ownership, and accountability in both your work and your team's work.
• Mentoring: Mentor team members to help them develop new skills, broaden their technical horizons, identify their biases, and effectively contribute within a highly collaborative team structure.
• Staffing: Support arXiv's growth by identifying and recruiting new talent and supporting and developing existing talent. Ensure the diverse mix of specialized skills necessary for arXiv's long term stability and service to the scientific community.

Technical Leadership [40%]

• System design and architecture: Guide and vet system designs within a project's scope.
• Code Quality: Keep abreast of code changes, ensure best practices, security, and quality standards are rigorously followed across all technical stacks, and provide constructive technical feedback.
• Cloud DevOps and Infrastructure: Drive the adoption of DevOps best practices; direct the management and optimization of team resources within a cloud environment, (Google Cloud Platform experience preferred), focusing on automation, monitoring, and infrastructure-as-code.
• Strategic Problem-Solving: Lead the team in tackling complex and ambiguous technical challenges by scoping and clarifying problems into well-defined, actionable tasks. Guide the development of solutions, stepping in to contribute code only when necessary to set standards or unblock critical path work.
• Technical Strategy and Prioritization: Define the short- and long-term technical strategy, set and enforce strategic priorities that align with the needs of arXiv's stakeholder community and its broader organizational goals.
• Incident response and learning: Participate in and improve incident response processes, drive actionable postmortems, and promote a culture of continuous improvement.

Project and stakeholder management [20%]

• Engineering Strategy & Prioritization: Develop, communicate, and maintain stable priorities for the development team, sometimes in the face of strong external pressures.
• Project Execution: Manage project schedules, identify risks, and track overall software development from concept to launch.
• Champion documentation: Author and review technical design documents to guide team implementation and maintain long-term clarity.
• Communication: Explain technical analyses and recommendations to both arXiv leadership and engineers.
• Collaboration & Coordination: Work with internal and external teams to deliver products and features that are developed alongside critical stakeholder groups, such as end users.
• Cross-functional alignment: Collaborate with arXiv leadership, advisors, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment on roadmap priorities and delivery timelines.

Required Qualifications

• 7-10 years of experience as a technical contributor to an engineering team
• At least 5 years of experience managing individual contributors in an engineering environment
• At least 3 years of experience managing engineering managers
• Proven leadership experience fostering collaboration and inclusion within technical teams and with external stakeholder groups
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field (or similar qualifications)
• Excellent stakeholder management skills and technical fluency

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience leading engineering teams following Agile methodology
• Experience developing and maintaining online publishing platforms
• Understanding of Open Science principles and the needs of Open Science stakeholders
• Master's degree in relevant field
