| Berkeley Carroll is a Pre-K through grade 12 college-preparatory school of approximately 1,000 students located in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn in New York City. Reporting to the Middle School Division Director and serving as a member of the Middle School administrative team, the Dean of Faculty is responsible for recruiting, coaching, and evaluating teachers, while ensuring the overall outstanding quality of the faculty. The Dean of Faculty plays a central role in coordinating and facilitating ongoing professional learning, supporting teachers as they refine instructional practices, and bringing new curricular initiatives to life. In collaboration with the Division Director and Assistant Director, the Dean of Faculty participates in faculty evaluations for teachers in their early years at Berkeley Carroll and supports Department Chairs in advancing program vision and alignment within and across divisions. This work includes guiding shared practices and priorities such as student-centered learning, interdisciplinary opportunities, and student assessment. Responsibilities Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment - Oversee and lead the refinement, alignment, and coherence of the middle school curriculum, fostering interdisciplinary connections where appropriate and ensuring that Berkeley Carroll’s Portrait of a Learner—its essential skills and habits of mind—is consistently cultivated
- Oversee and lead the organization, maintenance, and accessibility of all curriculum resources, ensuring that faculty can easily locate and navigate materials across grade levels
- Alongside the Assistant Director and Department Chairs, help faculty create, develop, and revise new course proposals
- Support Department Chairs in the exploration and use of relevant and appropriate Standardized Testing and National Contest Opportunities (e.g. MAP Testing, AAPPL, The American Mathematics Contest, and The Scholastic Writing Awards)
- Establish consistent assessment protocols and support Department Chairs and teachers in their analysis of data to inform instructional decisions and drive student learning outcomes
- Assist in guiding and revising faculty communications on student performance and growth (i.e. anecdotal reports)
- Support Department Chairs with school-wide and grade-level events
- Stay up to date on trends, best practices, and research in pedagogy, assessment, curriculum and course development
Faculty Recruitment, Development, and Evaluation - In partnership with Middle School Director and Assistant Director, lead a comprehensive process for recruiting and hiring new faculty
- Support the process to onboard new faculty, including but not limited to planning new faculty orientation, running the Welcoming Colleagues Program, and leading monthly meetings for new faculty on Middle School Priorities (i.e. SEL, restorative practices)
- Alongside Department Chairs, the Middle School Director, and Assistant Director, evaluate and facilitate feedback and development meetings with teachers in their early years at Berkeley Carroll, maintaining a high bar of accountability and performance
- Alongside divisional and senior leadership, support the continuing work to refine an evaluation system for veteran faculty
- Alongside Department Chairs, the Middle School Director, and Assistant Director, provide feedback and recommend professional development for all faculty to support them in meeting their goals
- Design and facilitate professional development sessions that build teacher capacity
- Provide facilitation, coaching, and guidance to faculty navigating interpersonal challenges and professional conflicts, fostering a culture of open communication, respect, and collaboration
- Stay apprised of professional development opportunities for specific initiatives identified within departments
Vertical and Horizontal Alignment - Develop strong relationships with department chairs in pursuit of the divisional vision, and work towards horizontal and vertical alignment within and between disciplines
- Collaborate with departments to ensure that vision statements and competencies developed through the PK–12 curriculum alignment process are meaningfully integrated into curriculum at each grade level.
- Collaborate with administration in lower and upper school to support the experience and readiness of students when transitioning from one division to the next
Teaching - Teach a reduced course load equivalent to 50% of a full teaching assignment.
Qualifications - Master’s degree
- Deep enthusiasm for middle school learners and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical excellence, professional growth, and staying current with best practices in education
- Deep expertise in middle school curriculum and instruction, and demonstrated success using data to drive instruction
- Familiarity with project-based learning, Building Thinking Classrooms, and standards-based grading
- Experience coaching and evaluating teachers preferred
- Commitment to continuous improvement through reflection, feedback, and professional learning
- Strong organizational, collaboration, and teamwork skills
- Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
- Strong cultural competency and experience supporting and encouraging a culture of diversity and inclusion
- Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication
