| Language Department Goals We believe in the power that learning a second language contributes to a student’s overall development. Our program seeks to: - Develop cultural competency, equity, and inclusion by providing dual exposure to both Spanish and Mandarin
- Develop proficiency in the following areas (adapted from World Readiness Standards, ACTFL):
- Communication skills (interpersonal, interpretive, presentational)
- Cultures (understanding cultural practices and products)
- Connections (make connections to other disciplines; access and evaluate information from and about diverse cultures and perspectives)
- Comparisons (language comparisons, cultural comparisons)
- Communities (interaction and collaboration within the community and beyond)
Key Responsibilities - Overtly support and act in accordance with the school’s mission and values
- Teach up to five classes at varying levels in grades 3-8
- At the elementary levels, work collaboratively with Lower School homeroom teachers to plan, teach, and assess Spanish language acquisition.
- Demonstrate appropriate planning and preparation for instruction at all levels
- Develop and maintain a classroom atmosphere centered on intellectual inquiry and student engagement.
- Foster classroom community through inclusionary, compassionate, and supportive practices
- Uphold professional standards of personal presentation, punctuality, professional courtesy, and discretion
- Appropriately carry out specific responsibilities as designated by the division (eg. duties, advisory, outdoor education trips, conferences, admissions events).
- Honor the confidentiality of school and student information.
- Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
- Engage in self-reflection and professional development through goal setting, lesson observations, professional development opportunities, and ongoing dialog with division directors.
