Example of Duties

The successful candidate will provide academic, vocational, and disability management counseling for students with disabilities in the Access Resource Center (ARC) at Monterey Peninsula College. Additionally, this individual may conduct workshops related to self-advocacy, disability management, and student success. Assignments may include both day and evening hours at the Monterey campus or Marina Education Center.

Under the supervision of the area Dean and the guidance of the Department, the part-time instructor will provide instruction in accordance with course descriptions, outlines, class schedules, and Governing Board policy; evaluate progress of students concerning educational matters, and perform other instructional related duties as assigned. Instructor may be assigned to the Monterey campus and/or Marina Education Center.

Provide academic, vocational and disability-management counseling to students with a variety of disabilities.
Perform counseling activities including initial interviews, general assessment, collection and certification of disability verification documentation, advisement, development of educational plans, registration assistance, and maintenance of ARC (DSPS) student files in compliance with state and federal regulations.
Facilitate the provision of support services and accommodations. develop and/or monitor ARC (DSPS) Academic Accommodation Plan.
Be familiar with assistive technology and alternate media in order to make recommendations for student accommodations.
Make appropriate referrals to on-campus and community resources.
Work with appropriate personnel to meet the requirements of laws pertaining to access for persons with disabilities in higher education.
Maintain liaison with educational and community-based organizations, including the Department of Rehabilitation, for ongoing referral.
Conduct student outreach, recruitment, and retention activities.
Consult and problem-solve with staff/faculty on disability-related matters and student educational issues.
Advocate for students with disabilities as appropriate
Participate in department, division and campus meetings. participate in ARC program review processes.
Participate in the development and achievement of ARC program student learning outcomes.
Represent students with disabilities in college activities
Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to, and appreciation for the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

Qualifications

Possession of a master's degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in rehabilitation counseling,

Possession of a master's degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in special education, and twenty four or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, or social work;

A master's degree in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, career development, or social welfare; and either twelve or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following;
- Counseling or guidance for students with disabilities; or
- Counseling and/or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities.

The equivalent. (Equivalency Forms must be submitted for consideration)

AND

a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience with or ability to provide counseling services for students with disabilities at the community college level.
Experience with or the ability to teach specialized courses for students with disabilities at the community college level (Learning Skills courses or the equivalent).
Experience with or ability to conduct workshops and program presentations about DSPS.
Willingness and ability to work cooperatively with colleagues on matters promoting services for students with disabilities and the ARC Program.

Teaching assignments are part-time and temporary in nature. Assignments are subject to Governing Board approval, adequate enrollment size, and assignment to a contract instructor.

Work ScheduleAs arranged during Access Resource Center hours of operation:
M-TH 8:00am - 5:00pm
F 8:00am - 12:00pm
Evening hours may be arranged as needed.
