The Middle School Dean of Students plays a pivotal role in shaping the culture, well-being, and daily student experience of Bosque School’s middle school. Working closely with the Middle School Division Head,  the Dean of Students helps cultivate a community where students feel known, supported, and challenged to grow. This role blends student support, culture leadership, and collaboration with faculty and families. The Dean of Students partners with colleagues to guide student conduct, support social-emotional development, and help students navigate the complexities of adolescence with accountability, care, and respect. The Dean of Students also contributes to student learning by teaching designated components of the middle school WELLBEING curriculum. 

Through daily presence, thoughtful partnership with adults, and meaningful engagement with students, the Dean of Students helps steward a middle school environment where community, responsibility, and belonging thrive.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Culture & Conduct

• Serve as a central leader in maintaining a positive, respectful, and inclusive middle school culture.
• Guide student conduct by responding to behavioral concerns while promoting accountability, restorative practices, and positive student behavior.
• Coordinate disciplinary responses in collaboration with the Division Head, including detentions, suspensions, and restorative interventions.
• Maintain clear documentation and communication regarding disciplinary matters with relevant school leaders, faculty, and families.
• Ensure disciplinary practices are equitable and developmentally appropriate.
• Maintain a visible presence in student spaces during breaks, transitions, and community times.
• Participate in and support middle school morning meetings as a central practice for community building.

Student Support & Wellbeing

• Collaborate with the Division Head, counselors, WELLBEING teachers, learning support team, and Grade Level Deans to support student wellbeing.
• Participate in regular student-of-concern meetings to identify and support students needing additional academic, behavioral, or social-emotional support.
• Meet with students and families to address concerns and help students navigate conflict.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of social-emotional learning and well-being programming.
• Teach designated components of the middle school WELLBEING curriculum, such as leadership programming for 8th-grade students.

Faculty Partnership & Program Leadership

• Serve as a thought partner to faculty on student support, classroom management, and communication with families.
• Partner with the Division Head and Grade Level Deans to support grade-level programming and initiatives, including retreats, experiential learning opportunities, and milestone events.
• Provide input on divisional planning, such as advisory placement and review of the middle school master schedule.
• Support student leadership and community engagement by co-sponsoring the middle school LEAD team and helping coordinate events, including the Step-Up Ceremony and Fun Friday programming.
• Participate in the middle school admissions process by reviewing applicant files, interviewing prospective students and admissions buddies, and contributing to committee discussions.
• Attend and support admissions and community engagement events, helping represent and communicate the value of a Bosque education and the middle school program.

School Engagement

• Support the Division Head in monitoring the overall student experience within the middle school.
• Assist in reviewing student grades and comments to help identify emerging student concerns.
• Help coordinate and support the supervision of middle school social events.
• Serve as a visible presence at school events and divisional programs.
• Contribute to divisional planning, policy review, and school safety efforts.
• Participate in designated summer planning time with the Division Head to prepare for the upcoming school year.
• Engage in professional development relevant to the role.
