Learning Specialist, Grades 9-12

Duties and Responsibilities:

As the Upper School Learning Specialist, you will: 

• Review and interpret all psych educational testing and other medical reports, and create an Individual Accommodation Plan for each student with a diagnosis in the Upper School, complete with long-term goals and specific objectives; also update accommodation/learning plans every three years, and update accommodation plans as needed for College Board and ACT applications for accommodations.
• Observe and evaluate individual students displaying academic or behavioral difficulties and assess their learning strengths and challenges.
• Provide individualized and small group instruction to diagnosed students (via teacher referrals, school reports, and classroom observations) in grades 9 through 12 in consultation with divisional leadership in all support areas.  
• Partner proactively with Upper School administration and college counseling to support students with different learning styles and faculty in their efforts to advance students with different learning needs.
• Participate in classroom instruction as needed.
• Meet regularly with the Division Heads and the student support services teams (i.e. school nurse, counselors, and other learning specialists) to review at-large student needs and address those needs directly.
• Develop a roster of students who need individualized learning support, whether due to learning differences, prolonged health absences (illness, concussion, etc.), or mental health needs, and periodically, advancement.
• Coordinate with 9 through 12 grade faculty to ensure continuity of the curriculum. 
• Attend student support meetings and other meetings deemed appropriate to implement specific support strategies.
• Stay abreast of current trends with cutting-edge research on learning, study skills, and learning differences support in order to develop a comprehensive learning strategies curriculum for students in grades 9 - 12 or broader. 
• Initiate and schedule parent conferences as needed.
• Collaborate and gather feedback from the administrators and department chairs in the development, evaluation, and revision of the academic support program to ensure students are prepared for the next grade level.
• Maintain confidential student records and keep accurate documentation of sessions, meetings, and assessments. 
• Participate in committee, department, and instructional support staff meetings as well as school-sponsored events that would benefit from your area of expertise.
• Pursue professional development opportunities and attend conferences and professional meetings in order to remain current with industry trends.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising administrator.

Working closely with diagnosed Upper School Students, you will: 

• Meet with students and inform parents/guardians in order to provide tailored interventions that meet individual learning needs.
• Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, materials, and resources to provide academic support and assess student progress.
• Provide individual curricular support, as well as executive function skills development, to students with learning challenges due to learning disabilities, attention issues, social/emotional concerns, or weak organization and study skills.
• Teach new and incoming 9th graders an “executive functioning, study skills, and academic habits” seminar. 
• Teach in our Interim Term. 

Working closely with the Upper School Faculty, you will:  

• Consult regularly with faculty at each grade level to ensure timely academic screening and treatment planning for executive function deficits and learning needs.
• Promote effective practices in learning within the classroom setting and provide instructional leadership.
• Partner with faculty to coordinate and implement recommendations and accommodations and to facilitate faculty’s understanding of students’ learning styles.
• Ensure that faculty understand each student’s learning profile. 
• Mentor faculty in instruction along with differentiated instruction.
• Support a smooth transition for students to the Upper School and beyond. 

Qualifications and Experience:

• Master’s degree from an accredited institution or the international equivalent with a focus in a related field. Doctoral degree preferred. 
• Minimum of 5 years prior Upper School teaching experience in independent schools preferred, with a strong background in curriculum and instruction.

• Knowledge of learning disabilities, psycho-educational tests, reports, and assistive technology.
• Knowledge of administering and interpreting assessments and test results, academic achievement, and diagnostic testing.
• Experience analyzing data, in terms of what will impact student learning and success.
• Ability to handle confidential material and situations with discretion and sensitivity.
• Proven success as a leader in program development.
• Possess a high degree of self-management and the ability to take initiative while being in continuous communication and collaboration with multiple stakeholders.
• Full understanding of differentiated instructional strategies across the curriculum.
• Strong networking skills to ensure access to resources in the broader community.
• Exceptionally capable in both written and oral communication. 
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. 
• Must pass a Jessica Lunsford Level II background check and drug test.

• CPR/AED/First Aid can be obtained upon hiring.
