Vice Chair for Education, Department of Radiology

Dartmouth Health’s Department of Radiology is seeking a Vice Chair for Education (VCE) to join our dynamic Department in the beautiful Upper Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont. Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, the system’s central clinical hub and Academic Medical Center, is located immediately adjacent to bustling college town of Hanover, NH. Hanover is home to the world-renowned Dartmouth College and Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.

We are seeking a skilled, visionary, and impactful radiologist leader to define and execute on a vision for incredible educational programs intended for all levels of learners: pre-medical pipeline programs, medical students, residents, fellows, faculty development programs, and continuing education programming for practicing attendings. Educating is central to the Department’s mission, with many well-known programs and well-known national educators calling Dartmouth home. Dartmouth Radiology’s educational programs predominantly are housed at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), a nationally recognized tertiary care hospital with an NCI-designated cancer center, a comprehensive stroke center, and a level I trauma center.

For the Vice Chair’s clinical component, the Vice Chair will join a clinical section based on the candidate’s subspeciality and preferred practice area (e.g. abdominal imaging, emergency radiology, neuroradiology, mammography, etc).

Position Summary

The Vice Chair of Education will be a nationally known educator and educational leader, one capable of vision setting and execution. The Vice Chair will report to the Chair and be the Chair’s delegate to oversee all educational activities in the Department while also being the primary point of interface with the DHMC Graduate Medical Education (GME) office and the Geisel School of Medicine’s Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) program. The VCE will vision set, support, grow, enhance, and oversee the following programs

• Pipeline programs for pre-medical students and non-physician learners
• Medical student education
• Departmental residencies
• Departmental fellowship programs
• Faculty development programing as it interfaces with educating, including programs on how to teach
• Continuing medical education (CME) programming for faculty and external practicing radiologists

The Dartmouth Health Department of Radiology is a national leader in teaching radiology to medical students, with numerous nationally- and internationally-recognized educators and extensive dissemination of scholarly work pertaining to educational techniques and novel programs. These programs are constantly evolving and there is a desire to continue our long history in disseminating best practices in the education of students. Dartmouth Radiology hosts multiple outstanding residencies, including in Diagnostic Radiology and an integrated DR/IR program, as well as multiple fellowships. Our students, residents, and fellows learn in the setting of our thriving clinical practice. We want our clinical services to be a welcoming, safe, and educational place for learners, and towards that goal, the VCE will work closely with the Vice Chair for Clinical Operations. The VCE will also interface with other Vice Chairs in the areas where education and learners intersect, including the mission critical areas of Quality, IT, and Research. The VCE will also interface with section heads and section educational liaisons.

Supporting Scholarship

We anticipate the VCE, along with our Vice Chair for Research, will help our students and trainees in engaging in scholarship as needed by their programs, and as desired for their personal professional growth. Additionally, we anticipate the VCE will assist educators throughout the department in disseminating information about their novel programs via talks, manuscripts, and other media. Finally, we endeavor for all Vice Chairs to be academically engaged to some extent based on their personal interest.

Within the Department, opportunities for scholarship abound; as a national leader in serving populations across a wide geographic area, there are ample opportunities to publish and speak on the innovative programs and the delivery of health care in this setting. We also have cutting-edge technology and advanced imaging techniques which also offer fertile ground for scholarship. Collaboration with other productive researchers inside and outside the department is also an immense opportunity; for all faculty, working closely with engaged students, residents, and fellows in academic endeavors is also highly encouraged.

All faculty are encouraged to participate in national societies and organizations, with an eye towards developing a regional and/or national reputation for clinical excellence.

Reporting Structure

The Vice Chair for Education will report directly to Chair of Radiology (who is also the Vice President of the Radiology Service Line for Dartmouth Health). The Vice Chair for Education will have a home section (and section head) for their clinical work. For projects and initiatives under the Vice Chair’s purview, the VC will serve as a leader of teams of physicians and staff.

Overall, the VC should have the ability to engage and inspire others, including physician colleagues, department staff, and others throughout the institution. There is a strong working relationship with other departments and divisions and all sections participate in multidisciplinary meetings and group conferences. The VCE will be an integral member of the Department’s leadership team, who together, ensure all mission areas are thriving. The VCE will also collaborate with institutional and school executive leadership to optimize our educational programing and education broadly at Dartmouth Health and the Giesel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.

• American Board of Radiology Certified in Diagnostic Radiology
• Must obtain and maintain a medical license in both New Hampshire and Vermont
• Training and/or experience in educational administration
• The ability to be appointed at the Assistant, Associate, or full Professor rank, depending on experience, with a preference for candidates at the Associate or Full Professor rank.
• This is a 1.0 FTE position.
