Overview
Frozen Section Freezing techniques, cutting and staining frozen section slides for pathologic diagnosis. Grossing and accessioning of surgical pathology specimens.

Principal Responsibilities:

• Perform freezing techniques, according to specimen protocols for frozen sectioning, preparation of frozen section slides for histological analyisis by a pathologist.
• Organize and label slides for distribution to Histology.
• Organize specimens and frozen section blocks following completion of frozen section diagnosis.
• Prosection of simple specimens, core biopsy specimens, large simple biopsy specimens, and non-complex specimens under the supervision of a certified Pathologist’s Assistant and/or a Pathologist.
• Prepare specimens/tissue samples for analysis and diagnosis using specialized laboratory techniques.
• Complete tissue intake/accessioning of surgical pathology specimens.
• Ensuring the timely processing of frozen section specimens for patients currently in the OR awaiting results.
• Pick up specimens in various operating rooms and deliver to Surgical Pathology for processing.
• Perform staining of frozen section slides for histological analysis by a pathologist.
• Maintain data of Frozen Section Laboratory equipment as required by CAP.
• Maintain inventory and ordering of accessioning and grossing supplies.
• Perform other functions as necessary for providing anatomic pathology services. Clean, organize and stock grossing stations.
• Maintain laboratory facilities and work areas, including the cleaning and organizing of countertops, fridges and bone saws.
• Perform other functions as necessary for providing anatomic pathology services.

Required Skills and Abilities
1. Very detailed oriented; highly motivated and highly organized.

2. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; reliable and dependable with the ability to deal effectively with all levels of staff.

3. Ability to work with minimal supervision; Ability to function both independently and as part of a team.

4. Ability to maintain confidentiality/HIPAA policies and work with surgical biohazard specimens.

5. Must be willing and able to walk long distances within the hospital and lift 5-10 lbs.

Preferred Skills and Abilities
1. Certification as HT (ASCP).
2. Bachelor of Science degree with appropriate major or Educational requirements sufficient to meet the qualifications of Standard 493.1489 of CLIA (associate degree in laboratory sciences or medical laboratory technology or 60 semester hours from an accredited institution (minimum of 24 science courses).
3. Experience in a medical environment.
4. Prior related work experience.
5. Prior experience with CoPath.

Required Education and Experience

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree, or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
