The Fairbanks North Star Borough is a local government agency serving the interior of Alaska, Fairbanks and the surrounding communities. The department employs around 100 people during the peak summer season and has an annual operating budget of approximately $8.5 million. The department consists of four divisions, Administration, Recreation Services, Parks Maintenance, and Pioneer Park. A wide variety of amenities are offered to the community including 5 outdoor recreation areas, 3 indoor swimming pools, a recreation center, an ice arena, sports fields, and comprehensive trail system. In the warmer months, residents enjoy the beautiful swim beaches, historic parks, youth programs and fun family events. When the temperature is cold, our parks are still hot! Opportunities for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, ice fishing and snow machining are available through the winter months. Special events are planned year round and recreational programs for seniors and the disabled are offered weekly. The department also operates Pioneer Park, a 44-acre historic themed park full of attractions, activities, museums, and an arts and cultural center. There is something for everyone to enjoy!
